defer – verb : to postpone, to hold off or put off

To defer implies a deliberate putting off to a later time.  You can use defer in a variety of ways.  You can defer to someone else in a meeting and allow them to talk or even to make a decision.  You can defer your military service if you meet certain requirements to do so. Defer can also be a synonym for procrastination. Sometimes you can defer to make a new word of the day at word du jour for several days… as a super cool example of the word of the day.
